인스턴트그래픽의 첫 전시 《Mockup》은 기성의 이미지를 재조합하여 위트 있는 이미지를 생산하는 인스턴트그래픽의 작업 방식에 '목업'을 더합니다. '목업'은 제품 디자인 분야에서 실제 제품을 만들기 전 모형을 제작하는 과정을 말합니다. 이번 전시에서는 '목업' 작업을 위한 파일을 기존의 이미지, 실제 오브제 등과 함께 하나의 재료로 사용했습니다. 인스턴트그래픽이 선보이는 241건의 이미지는 생산을 위한 모형은 아니지만, 그렇다고 생산되지 않을 거라고 장담할 수는 없습니다. 생산과 비생산, 실재와 가상, 예술과 디자인 어딘가를 교차하는 복합적인 지점에 아스라이 서 있는 인스턴트그래픽을 만나봅니다.



인스턴트그래픽은 이미지를 다루는 방식에 대한 이야기이다. 2017년부터 시작된 그의 작업 방식을 살펴보면 규칙이나, 이론에 구속되지 않은 자유로운 형태로, 작업을 위한 재료는 그의 눈을 사로잡은 주변 이미지에서 시작한다. 인터넷이나 거리에서 무작위로 이미지를 수집하고 이를 자유롭고 즉흥적으로 조합한다. 주관적인 감각과 직관에 따라 그의 손에서 재생산된 것은 우연하지만 역동적이고 재치 있는 결과물이다. '인스턴트그래픽'이라는 명칭 자체가 즉석에서 찾은 기성의 이미지를 즉흥적으로 재조합하여 새로운 이미지를 생산한다는 작업 방식을 잘 나타내고 있다.

인스턴트그래픽의 작업은 즉흥성이 핵심을 관통하면서 몇 가지 특징적인 모습을 보인다. 재조합된 이미지는 고정되지 않고, 유동적이며 변화할 수 있는 형태로 존재하여 열린 해석과 다양한 가능성을 열어둔다. 재조합이라는 일시적 행위는 하나의 우연한 사건이다. 인스턴트그래픽은 자신과 이미지 사이에서 지속해서 새로운 방식의 상호작용으로 계속해서 새로운 시각적 결과물을 찾아 나서는 실험적인 태도를 취한다.

Instant Graphics is a story about the way we manipulate images. His practice, which began in 2017, is free-form, unconstrained by rules or theories, and the material for his work starts with the images around him that catch his eye. He collects random images from the internet or the street and combines them in a free and improvised way. What is reproduced in his hands according to his subjective senses and intuition is a haphazard, yet dynamic and witty result. The name "instant graphics" itself describes the way he works: improvising and recombining ready-made images he finds on the spot to produce new ones.

With spontaneity at its core, Instant Graphic's work takes on several distinctive forms. The recombined image is not fixed, but exists in a fluid and changeable form, open to interpretation and multiple possibilities. The temporary act of recombination is a chance event. Instant Graphic adopts an experimental attitude, constantly seeking new ways of interacting between itself and its images, constantly searching for new visual outcomes.

Instant Graphic's inaugural exhibition "Mockup" adds a literal "mockup" to its existing practice. In product design, mockup refers to the process of creating a mockup before building the actual product, but in his work, he uses files for mockups as a material alongside existing images, real objects, and more. The 241 images he presents in this exhibition are not mockups for production, but that doesn't mean they won't be produced. At this complex intersection of production and non-production, the real and the virtual, art and design, we hope that instant graphics will continue to playfully transcend conventional boundaries for as long as possible.
